Recently, increasing interest has been focused on the hydrolysis of carbohydrates to monosaccharides, among which, glucose and xylose as typical platform sugars can be used to produce chemicals and biofuels. As heterogeneous catalysts, solid acids have gained extensive attention for biomass biorefinery and could replace the conventional process owing to their excellent properties, including acceptable acidity and easy separation. In particular, biochar-based solid acids derived from biomass are promising for biomass conversion owing to the low-cost of feedstocks and the simple preparation procedure. Herein, we attempt to provide a critical overview of biochar-based solid acids for hydrolysis of carbohydrates into glucose and xylose. The preparation methods and properties of biochar-based catalysts as well as the influence of their properties on catalytic performance were discussed in detail. We also highlight the major challenges facing the use of biochar-based solid acids for carbohydrate hydrolysis.

Due to the complex factors that can influence these reactions, a clear-cut mechanism has not yet been developed. Starch-iodine complexes, especially the amylose-iodine complex, are the most investigated of the polysaccharide-iodine reactions, and the study of this reaction can be used as a basis for the investigation of other polysaccharide-iodine reactions. In this paper, significant aspects of the reaction were introduced, including the influence of the polysaccharide structure on the properties of the resulting complexes, the relationship between the concentration of CaCl2 and formation of the final products, as well as the form of the polyiodides in these complexes. The interior structure and the surface morphology of the complexes were discussed, along with the progress in research related to this reaction.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can self-assemble in suspension to form chiral cholesteric structure of liquid crystal with unique birefringence phenomena, and the structural parameters strongly depend upon the aspect ratio, surface structure, and physicochemical properties of CNC, along with suspension media. Many attempts have been carried out to keep this cholesteric structure in solid state via removing solvent, such as slower solvent-evaporation, rapid vacuum-filtration, and spin-casting under centrifugal force. The solid-state iridescence of the cholesteric CNC arrays has been used as structural color, and showed a great potential for the coding and securing of optical information. Moreover, to promote practical applications of such structural iridescence, the cholesteric CNC arrays have been embedded into many kinds of substrates via in-situ reaction of monomers or physical blending with polymers. However, this kind of structural iridescences may lead to misreading information. The uniaxial-orientation assembly of CNC has thus been proposed via regulating external force fields of CNC self-assembly, and successfully achieved nanoparticle assembly-induced solid-state monochrome emission based on enhanced inelastic collision theory of CNC dipoles and photons. This method can eliminate the chiral arrangement of CNC and the corresponding iridescence, and the structural monochromaticity can contribute to enhancing the accuracy of optical information. Overall, the CNC can be controllably assembled as the ordered arrays in solid state and presented structural color, and support optical anti-counterfeiting strategies different from the fluorescent technologies.

Cellulose is the most abundant biomass material in nature and it is mainly extracted from natural or lignocellulosic fibers. After purification, cellulose fibers exhibit two interesting features for their further transformation into nanomaterials: a hierarchical and multi-level strcture, and a semicrystalline microstructure. Different forms of cellulose nanomaterials, resulting from a top-down deconstructing strategy (cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs)) or bottom-up strategy (bacterial cellulose (BC)) can be prepared. Multiple mechanical shearing actions applied to cellulosic fibers release more or less the nanofibrils individually. A controlled strong acid hydrolysis treatment can be applied to cellulosic fibers allowing dissolution of non-crystalline domains. Such cellulose nanomaterials have been the focus of an exponentially increasing number of works or reviews devoted to understand such materials and their applications. They have a high potential for an emerging industry. In the nanoscale, cellulose exhibits specific properties broadening the applications of this naturally occurring polymer. An overview of existing methods for the preparation of cellulose nanomaterials and their specific properties that outperform and contrast with cellulose in the microscale is proposed.

Recently, biomass-derived porous carbons (BPCs) have received increasing attention due to their excellent physical and chemical properties, widespread availability, and low production cost. In this review, the progress in preparing BPCs and the properties of prepared BPCs are presented and discussed. In addition, the applications of BPCs as electrode materials for supercapacitors are also summarized. More importantly, the pore structure and surface properties of BPCs are all determining factors to improve electrochemical performance. Moreover, a high energy density and power density can be pursued by using composites based on BPCs as electrode materials, of which combining transition metallic oxide with BPCs is one of the most attractive selections. Therefore, rational design of BPCs with respect to the supercapacitor’s performance should be conducted in the future.

Lignocellulose is the most abundant renewable resource on earth. However, owing to the tightly entangled structural characteristics, it is challenging to convert lignocellulose into bio-based products in the biorefinery process without pretreatment. Pretreatment can destroy the natural resistance structure of lignocellulosic biomass, which is conducive to its downstream enzymatic saccharification and fermentation process. Physical, chemical, and physicochemical pretreatments have been widely conducted for lignocellulosic biomass; several updated approaches and peculiar chemicals have also been proposed for these pretreatment methods in the recent years. Hence, this study comprehensively reviews the novel technologies and chemicals that were applied in the various pretreatments. In addition, the mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages of the updated pretreatments are discussed to provide a reference for developing new pretreatment methods.

http://pbm.ijournals.cn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202304008&flag=1

Against the backdrop of the dual carbon goals, the papermaking industry in China faces significant pressure to reduce emissions and lower carbon intensity. Based on historical data of energy consumption in the pulp and paper industry in China from 2000 to 2020, this study analyzed the current status of paper production and energy consumption in China. Two methods were employed to predict the growth trend of paper production in China, and three carbon dioxide emission accounting methods were compared. The study used an accounting method based on the industry's overall energy consumption and predicted the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the Chinese papermaking industry from 2021 to 2060 under three scenarios. The study identified the timing for achieving carbon peak and proposed the measures for carbon neutrality. The results indicated that: (1) the CO2 emissions of the Chinese papermaking industry in 2020 were 111.98 million tons. (2) Under low-demand, high-demand, and baseline scenarios, the papermaking industry is expected to achieve carbon peak during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. (3) In 2060, under the three scenarios, CO2 emissions from the papermaking industry will decrease by 11%-31% compared to the baseline year. However, there will still be emissions of 72-93 million tons, requiring reductions in fossil energy consumption at the source, increasing forestry carbon sequestration and utilization of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology, and taking measures such as carbon trading to achieve carbon neutrality.

Countries are duly focusing more on biomass resources because of the increasing oil crisis. Owing to their excellent properties, such as natural characteristics, good mechanical performance, and outstanding chemical properties, cellulose-based materials are highly valued as promising bio-derived nanomaterials, especially bacterial cellulose (BC). The main advantage lies in eliminating the problem of removing lignin and hemicellulose from woody cellulose. Moreover, the use of BC reduces the consumption of wood, the excessive use of which aggravates global warming. Herein, we summarize the applications of BC composites in filter, medical, and conductive materials, and other fields. This review contributes to further expand the applications of this renewable polymer.

http://pbm.ijournals.cn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202501002&flag=1

The Indonesian papermaking industry plays a pivotal role in Southeast Asia’s bioeconomy, contributing significantly to export earnings, employment, and non-oil GDP. In 2024, the sector accounted for approximately 3.9% of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas GDP, employing over 288,000 direct workers. This paper presented a comprehensive outlook on the global and domestic papermaking industries, evaluated Indonesia’s current industrial position, identified key challenges, and explored sustainable opportunities through the utilization of alternative non-wood fibers. Using secondary data from Fastmarkets RISI (2024), the Indonesian Ministry of Industry (2025), and Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the analysis revealed that Indonesia ranked second in Asia and first in ASEAN for pulp production, with installed capacities of 14.43 million tons for pulp and 21.31 million tons for paper in 2024. However, reliance on imported long fibers and limitations in Industrial Plantation Forest (HTI) areas remained major constraints. Emerging opportunities included the valorization of biomass residues—such as empty fruit bunches (EFB), rice straw, banana pseudostem, abaca, kenaf, and ramie—as alternative fiber sources. These materials presented technical and economic feasibility for integration into a circular bioeconomy framework. The study concluded with policy recommendations for sustainable resource management, innovation ecosystems, and strategic investment to enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global market.
