Identification and Control of Pitch in the Final Product of the Eucalyptus Pulp Production Line

http://pbm.ijournals.cn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202501001&flag=1

This study evaluated the agglomerating effect of aluminum on substances in weak black liquor from eucalyptus pulp washing, as well as its contribution to the formation of inorganic deposits. The addition of aluminum sulfate led to an increase in the levels of silica and magnesium, which were the major components of the resulting inorganic solids (termed "artificial pitch"). The artificial pitch closely resembled the historical deposits from a filtrate tank during normal operation (referred to as Event 1), thereby validating its suitability as a representative model. The deposits from Event 2, which occurred six years later, exhibited higher metal concentrations. This was attributed to delays in maintenance following a major earthquake. A parallel laboratory study was conducted to test the coagulant ECO 1024. It was found that this coagulant reduced the residual aluminum in mill water by 42%, and it was projected to result in annual savings of US$117,420. The results confirmed that aluminum played a role in promoting the agglomeration of silica and magnesium, which in turn contributed to the buildup of deposits, particularly under stable operating conditions. Moreover, ECO 1024 proved to be effective in mitigating the challenges associated with aluminum, offering both technical and economic advantages for optimizing pulp washing processes.

Toward a Sustainable Future: Outlook and Opportunities for Indonesia's Papermaking Industry

http://pbm.ijournals.cn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202501002&flag=1

The Indonesian papermaking industry plays a pivotal role in Southeast Asia’s bioeconomy, contributing significantly to export earnings, employment, and non-oil GDP. In 2024, the sector accounted for approximately 3.9% of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas GDP, employing over 288,000 direct workers. This paper presented a comprehensive outlook on the global and domestic papermaking industries, evaluated Indonesia’s current industrial position, identified key challenges, and explored sustainable opportunities through the utilization of alternative non-wood fibers. Using secondary data from Fastmarkets RISI (2024), the Indonesian Ministry of Industry (2025), and Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the analysis revealed that Indonesia ranked second in Asia and first in ASEAN for pulp production, with installed capacities of 14.43 million tons for pulp and 21.31 million tons for paper in 2024. However, reliance on imported long fibers and limitations in Industrial Plantation Forest (HTI) areas remained major constraints. Emerging opportunities included the valorization of biomass residues—such as empty fruit bunches (EFB), rice straw, banana pseudostem, abaca, kenaf, and ramie—as alternative fiber sources. These materials presented technical and economic feasibility for integration into a circular bioeconomy framework. The study concluded with policy recommendations for sustainable resource management, innovation ecosystems, and strategic investment to enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global market.

An Overview and Future Prospects of China’s Pulp and Paper Industry

http://pbm.ijournals.cn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202501003&flag=1

China's pulp and paper industry has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a global leader in production and consumption since 2009. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the industry's current status, historical evolution, and future development trends based on industry data and policy reviews. It examines key characteristics, including phased growth patterns, shifting product portfolios, high regional concentration, and a raw material structure heavily reliant on imports. The analysis further explores the industry's progress in technological innovation, equipment modernization, and product diversification, highlighting the critical link between R&D investment and technological breakthroughs. Looking forward, the industry is entering a phase of high-quality development, driven by several key trends: the diversification of fiber sources, particularly the resurgence of non-wood materials like bamboo; the intelligent and digital transformation of machinery; the development of high-grade and functional products; and a critical push towards green and low-carbon transformation. This paper concludes that navigating raw material supply security and embracing sustainable innovation are pivotal for the future competitiveness of China's pulp and paper sector.

Membrane Separation Coupling and Resource Recovery: Technological Reconstruction and Path Optimization for Zero Liquid Discharge in Papermaking Wastewater

http://pbm.ijournals.cn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=202501005&flag=1

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) in papermaking wastewater is a fundamental solution to the industry's water resource crisis and environmental pressures, with its core lying in the achievement of high-level wastewater reuse and resource recovery through technological innovation. This paper focused on membrane separation technology, systematically analyzing its coupling mechanisms and application bottlenecks within a ZLD system for papermaking wastewater. A four-stage technical framework of "Pretreatment-Membrane Separation-Concentrate Treatment-Resource Recovery" was constructed, with a particular emphasis on the applicable conditions and integration strategies of membrane processes such as ultrafiltration/microfiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, membrane distillation, and forward osmosis.
